Add these 4 elements(in just your Welcome Sequence)… for a more healthy and profitable list
ELEMENT 1 — PERSONALITY
Okay, I’m gonna start off with the most basic yet powerful things that if done correctly could be the only thing from people ignoring your emails to…
Seeing Your Name Pop Up And Clicking ASAP - Like It Contains Their Favorite Drug!
So take this seriously…
I know. I know. You’ve heard this a gazillion times, but I really want you to understand what a turn off it is when someone receives a welcome email written by AI – i.e robotic, formal and terribly bland!
So here’s how you nail personality.
First off – don’t write it like an email you send to your boss asking for sick leave.
Instead…
Write it as if you’re writing an email to a friend or a neighbour.
Though I wouldn’t recommend writing it like a neighbour if you have neighbours like me haha (I’m a pretty grumpy neighbour– oops).
But hey, that’s not the point. The point is you gotta add that personality in there!
Drop those f-bombs(If that's how you are).
Or if your tone is more empathy-driven, show that you care(like you secretly care about that ex of yours).
Share that embarrassing story! (The more embarrassing the better - the more afraid you are to share, the better).
Writing has completely changed from what is used to be ages ago.
Most writers had no idea how much of their work will ever be read and some even planned to not publish it.
There's a different form of intimacy they had with their work because it would only be them, their pen, and no eyes to judge.
Nowadays it's too easy to get a whole lot of eyeballs on your work.
Everyone is writing like it has no wiggle room for creativity.
But You Should Write Whatever the Hell You Want However The Hell You Want It!
Writing plain and simple - like AI - is not what real reading enthusiasts are looking forward to.
They want more Kafkaesque. More Dostoyevsky. More Jung.
Yes it's important to convey concepts as clearly as possible but you can still do that while dipping everything with your weirdness.
You're writing should worry you a little... or you're doing it WRONG.
Maybe all people need is to know that they’re not the only ones with twisted thoughts.
Ooh! And! And unless your business LITERALLY helps people fall asleep…
DON'T.
BE.
BORING.
Attention is currency, you don’t want them to be bored right at the start, you’d actually be better off sending no emails at all.
And I’m not just kidding around here either…
So head on over to your ESP(Email Service Provider) right now and start sprinkling in that personality!
Here's an Example showcase from one of LinkedIn's top ex-coaches:
“I got 99 personalities but a LinkedIn ghostwriter ain’t one
Hit me
I threatened to introduce y’all to every single one of my 99 personalities in this post
BUT nobody invited me round for steak dinner.
Message received loud and clear. I know when I’m not wanted.
ANYWAY
Speaking of msgs I’ve received, lots of you have DMed saying you feel like quitting.
Cz reach is down and this and that And I get it Being a creator is hard but I encourage you to keep posting and keep posting and work harder.
That’s how you grow from 1k to 10k to 100k+
To give you a realistic look into my routine…
↳ I invest 8 hours into LinkedIn on posting days.
I spend EIGHT hours engaging:
- on my posts with 1k comments
- on over 100 creators I like
- on 50+ DMs daily
It takes tons of time, effort, and energy.
↳ and is how I've built my LinkedIn to 100k+ over the last 4 years.
Now, here's the thing.
If you don't want a big LinkedIn audience, fine.
You can make $$$ without that.
BUT STOP CRYING ABOUT ENGAGEMENT.
TL;DR: You’ve got to engage tons to grow your own engagement, [NAME]?”
This is an email sent by one of the top ex-LinkedIn coaches whose shtick was being funny – even while being on supposedly the most “professional” app of our time.
It’s “personality-filled” and it perfectly depicts the kind of guy he is. Don’t copy him or anything but maybe – if you’re portraying a funny character too – steal how he maintains a casual tone while being entertaining. Be you.
Element 2 — Polarization:
This is one of the more “lesser seen” things you’ll see people talk about. And gosh is it powerful…
I think I heard this from one of the best copywriters to ever touch the face of the earth, Parris Lampropoulos.
The concept of polarization simply put is…
Extend Help The Middle Finger To Those You Can’t Serve!(Or Don’t Want To Serve)
(Figuratively… of course).
PLEASE DON’T SEND YOUR LIST A PICTURE OF YOU LITERALLY SHOWING THE MIDDLE FINGER OR ANYTHING!
Who knows though… that could work too if you're like a “Sigma Male” guru type.
Anyways — I have a small task for you…
Ignore all the fools who say “NicHing DowN iS bAd”.
Specialists always make more than generalists and that’s a fact. Even though generalists can do more things, a specialist is still paid more.
Furthermore:
Target only those you want and can help. Speak only for them and mention who you can’t or don't work with as many times as you wish.
This is not just a marketing “hack” but it’s ethical too!
Think about it…
Would you want someone who you can’t help to be on your list?
But hey, the more the merrier, right?
Wrong.
You don’t want a broad list with 10,000 boneheads who don’t know what they want or why they’re here.
You want 300 hyper fans that read everything you put out.
Now before you go, “This is complete horse radish!” Let me share something...
Frank Kern (a well known internet marketing legend), you’ve probably heard of him, does this superbly well.
He became the #1 affiliate for a product by only pitching it to his list of around 300 people.
While competing with people who had lists with thousands of people.
Polarization, baby!
Do it right and I swear to you – you’ll never run into email marketing problems again.
Let’s take this example off of Ben Settle’s sales page. It is a fantastic example on how to polarize without even excluding a group of people. A lot can be learnt here:
“Email Players is not for lazy business owners who can't focus and never implement anything (while complaining about information overload)... Or for businesses on a tight budget (even though it is only $3.23 per day — a price any legitimate business can afford — I still would not recommend going into debt to subscribe)... Or goo-roo fanboys who think they can learn a super secret ninja email trick today and be rich by next Thursday.
If that's you, don't waste your time.
And there's no pressure to stay on board, either.
My inner circle of Email Players and I will continue to bend the marketing world to our will whether you stay or quit. In fact, if you're not prepared to rapidly implement what you learn... or if you can't make a decision without consulting a swipe file, your Facebook friends, or your horoscope... or if you're just temporarily excited about the above perks and are not ready to do real work... then you should not subscribe.
This is for aggressive marketers only.
If you're milquetoast about marketing, you'll simply waste your money.
…”
Element 3 — The Reply:
This is more of an action element than a concept.
… and it’s simple.
All you have to do is somehow get your reader to click the reply button.
Sounds easy, right?
That’s because it is!
Yet, I see so many people ignore this…
It’s one of the easiest things you can change in your welcome email sequence(and one of the quickest).
You see... when you get replies to your email, Gmail(or whatever email client you use) sees that as a good sign and up goes your domain reputation.
Which means, higher deliverability, more open rates and ultimately more $$$.
All you have to do is ask your subscriber a question about (your niche)…
That’s… all there is to it.
I’m not even kidding.
You get better deliverability and after you start getting replies – you’ll realise the questions your audience ask keep repeating…
This Way You Learn More About Your Audience While Simultaneously Improving Deliverability
Another thing you should definitely definitely do is…
Remember to reply! (Don’t be an arse)
Think of it this way – Your email client will see a proper conversation taking place on their platform.
That's their ideal scenario.
And positive feedback like that will get you EVEN better deliverability.
More inboxing = More Opens = More $$$
… Or skip this part and end up in the spam folder…
😀
(Then you’ll have to pay me to get you outta there! Aughhh what a shame! 😩)
It’s all on you.
There’s no set-in-stone example but here’s a set of questions to slip in your Welcome Sequence wherever you find fit:
Ask your target audience these 5 questions
• What are your biggest challenges and frustrations?
• What are these problems costing you?
• What goals do you have this year?
• What would your life look like if you accomplished these goals?
• If you could have any question answered about (your topic or product, or the problem it solves), what would it be?
Element 4 — Email Numero Uno:
The welcome email can be a completely different chapter entirely on its own and there's a reason why people charge thousands of dollars just to write a banger Welcome Email.
I see a lot of people waste the HELL out of the Welcome Email.
How?
It usually goes something like, “Hey [First Name], here’s the {Lead Magnet} you wanted. Bye”
UM...
The Welcome Email Is Probably the Single Most Opened Email You’ll Ever Send Out!
That’s no horse radish… it’s real-time metrics.
It’s like a Sales letters headline. Read by many, internalized by few.
Don’t be afraid to showcase yourself, build authority, and let them know what kind of emails they’ll receive if they stay in tune.
Give them teasers, prove them you know your stuff and also…
Hype Up Your Sh*t!
You’ve poured your heart and soul into it.
So don't just tell them about benefits.
Paint a portrait of who they want to be embedded in them.
It’s VERY important for your teachings to have an instant positive impact on someone's life.
So make it actionable.
Make it a quick win.
So make it actionable “quick win” for your reader.
Make them go, “Wow, this person is onto something. I HAVE to keep an eye on them”
So in summary, here's the “bare spanking minimum” your Welcome Email should nail:
• Make your reader feel at home
• Build your authority
• Hype up your lead magnet
• Prompt them for a reply(optional but preferred)
• Tell them what you’ll be teaching in upcoming emails
If your Welcome Email is missing any of the above elements, head over to your autoresponder and tweak it up!
Orrrr(insert shameless plug here) let me do it for you… (it won’t be cheap, though).
Anyways…
Always keep in mind…
Where your prospect is – on their journey.
What questions are in their mind right now and how you want to answer them. Walk a mile in their shoes. Understand what they want to hear. How aware are they of your product. That depends again, on the kind of people you attract.
I realised how powerful this was myself when I ran Facebook Ads for an affiliate offer.
They were probably the ugliest ads ever created… But they worked!
That’s because after they put in their email, I’d meet them exactly where they wanted me to, answering everything that was going on in their minds.
And that fiends and friends...
That’s how you nail a Welcome Email.
The Welcome Email is sacred. So I can’t share any examples that come with it. To each business it’s different. I can’t dissect 20 different Welcome Emails here.
No further explanation.
